Karen Davila is one of the most recognizable names in the local media landscape. Through her work, she has defied many stereotypes in the industry. The most notable of all is that women aren’t just suited for soft news. Now, we see Filipina reporters covering maritime disputes, wars, and other social concerns thanks to what she and other female broadcast journalists of her time have accomplished.
The Her Legacy Project, in partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP) has chosen its first batch of 10 “bright eyed, smart, and ambitious” SHESTEMS scholars looking to break the glass ceiling and eventually become role models in STEM.
The SheSTEMS initiative of Karen Davila’s Her Legacy Project has launched its first cohort of female scholars, in partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP). This program aims to empower outstanding young women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by providing financial support, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Why should we care about women empowerment? "Because it affects all of us," says Karen Davila, the first UN Women National Goodwill Ambassador for the Philippines. We are so proud to share with you this first episode in a special series here on Paano Ba 'To, in support of UN Women Philippines. As a UN Women Champion, Bianca and UN Women Philippines aim to break down and understand women's issues in a way that isn't overwhelming, so we can take part in creating a more gender equal future. Most special thanks to UN Women Philippines Country Programme Coordinator Lenlen Mesina and Programme Coodinator Sandi Suplido for making this series possible. If high school pipe dreams went the way as planned, would’ve been a fashion designer. Middling at best, because she herself admits she wasn’t very good. Her father put things more bluntly, she recalled. That people who aren’t talented end up in the poorhouse.
Her creative flair is evident in her tastefully decorated home, her furniture a neutral palette, a foil for the works of art that adorn her walls. Behind where we sit, abstracts by Bernardo Pacquing, adjacent to a comforter cast in resin by Nikki Luna, evoking gender struggle. Across the room, on its own, a Fernando Zobel.
On the coffee table in front of us, books on fashion photographs that have appeared on the pages of Vogue through the years. Karen Davila is the first UN WOMEN National Goodwill Ambassador. She was appointed and received at the UN Headquarters in New York last October 2023.
